Bashindi

Bashindiis an ancient cemetery where it is said that there is the tomb of a medieval sheikh called Pasha Hindi. The site is located on the paved road between Dakhla and Kharga. The best preserved tomb is a square sandstone structure that belonged to a Roman named Kitines and probably dates to the 1st-2nd century. The sandstone tomb consists of six rooms and is decorated with traditional Egyptian funerary reliefs and inscriptions along the door jambs, in the sanctuary and at the tomb entrance. Although most of the ancient settlement is gone, there are still some Graeco-Roman tombs in the northern part of the village. Other tombs are located under the houses of the modern village (CISS Inventory 2010; Vivian 1990).
