Along the route from Kharga to Dakhla, at approximately 135 kilometres (84.3 miles) from Kharga, a series of sandstone outcroppings appear on both sides of the road. Rock inscriptions on them include both prehistoric and modern drawings of giraffes, camels and Bedouin tribal symbols (wasms) (Vivian 1990).
